The Complete Beginner’s Guide to Prayer

If you’re wanting to pray, but you don’t know how or where to start, you have come to the right place. In this beginner’s guide to prayer, I will teach you everything you need to know to get started.

Whether you’ve been a Christian your whole life, just recently became saved, or are going through a hard time and need divine intervention—- prayer is something that can seem complicated.

I am here to tell you that it doesn’t have to be that way. ☺️

1. Just Talk

Yes, it is that simple. Talk to Jesus like he is your father. Just talk to him. Tell him how you feel, tell him if you are hurting, tell him anything.

The first step to prayer is to open your heart and your mind to him. Don’t overthink this.

The enemy will try to convince you not to pray, he may whisper to you that “you’re stupid” or that “you don’t know how to pray” But don’t listen to those lies!

Start talking. Say whatever you feel/need to say.

2. Ask For Forgiveness

One of the first things I do when I pray, is ask for forgiveness of my sins.

Sometimes I simply pray a generic “Lord, forgive me of my sins.” Sometimes I am convicted of a specific sin, and I ask for forgiveness for that imparticular sin.

Once you have asked/prayed for forgiveness, you are ready for step three.

3. Accept That You Are Forgiven

Sometimes after I have asked for forgiveness, I still carry the weight of guilt. I can hear the lies coming into my mind. The lies tell me God is mad at me, or how could he listen to my prayers when I’ve just committed a sin.

Accept that you are forgiven.

Do not linger in guilt!

This is the beauty of Jesus dying for you, you are forgiven!

When you pray and ask for forgiveness, know that he has forgiven you, and don’t let it stop you from continuing your prayer.

Rest in his forgiveness and love over you.

4. State Your Belief In Jesus/Worship Him

Say out loud, that you believe Jesus is alive and that he rose from the dead and died for your sins. Declare that he is the living God and that HE is who you are praying to.

“Jesus, I believe you died for my sins and that you rose from the dead. Thank you for being my savior. It’s in your name I pray.”

5. Ask For What You Need

Jesus tells his disciples (followers) that they do not have because they do not ask.

The word “prayer” means to ask with belief.

Do you need a new job?

Ask him to help you find a new job.

Do you need guidance on a relationship you’re in?

Ask the Lord to help you and lead you.

Do you need healing in your body?

Ask and believe that you will be healed.

6. End Your Prayer In Jesus’ Name

And finally, close out your prayer with,

“In Jesus’ name, Amen.”

Amen is a Hebrew word and it means “surely, truly, or so be it.”

Now, you know how to pray after reading this beginner’s guide to prayer!

Don’t worry about whether or not you are “praying the right way.” In my opinion, Jesus doesn’t care how you sound. He just longs to hear from you!

Just pray. Talk to Jesus. Ask for forgiveness. Be forgiven. Tell him you love him. Tell him what you need. Amen.
